HOLIDAYS TIME FOR LOVE, SUICIDE
(Los Angeles)
Bert Gibble hates the holidays. He thinks they're far too depressing for far too many people. But you'd never hear him say that when he's at his work on the phone.

That's because Bert runs the SPL, otherwise known as the Suicide Prevention Line, a non-profit organization that helps lonely and depressed people during the holiday season.

The SPL offers a great many things through their phonelines, from a simple sympathetic voice to referrals to psychiatrists and psychologists to even a Saturday Night Singles Pot Luck every Saturday in December for those who don't have anyone special in their lives. Anything and everything Bert can think of to help people remain positive during the highly stressful time of the year.

"Suicide rates nearly triple during the holiday season," Bert told us while preparing the email announcement for this Saturday's Pot Luck, to be held at the Lion's Club in Los Feliz. "And this season's already off to a very bad start, with 7 suicides in the last week alone. So I'm doing what I do every year--trying to keep people happy, give them something to look forward to again. Only this year, we're working harder than ever."

For instance, this year the Pot Luck will include prizes donated by local businesses such as Dinner for Two at local restaurants and a Massage for Two at a local spa. The prizes will be given away by a raffle for anyone who shows up and pays at the door---

DOG EATEN BY CHUPACABRA?
(Los Angeles)
The reports of the strange Chupacabra have been known for years in Mexico and have, recently, been reported in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

Well, now California may have its own tale to tell, if Lucia SanRamos can be believed. She claims to have seen a Chupacabra eat her Labrador last weekend. The tale is a grisly one.

"I was walking my dog at the dog park over by the resevoir in Los Feliz," she told us, "when this creature came charging out of the water itself. It was easily the size of a tiger or a cougar or some big cat, with glowing red eyes and just a gigantic jaw of teeth. My poor Paucho never had a chance."

According to Ms. SanRamos, the Chupacabra lunged directly at her dog and nearly cut it in half with its first bite. Then, dragging the dog--and nearly her owner as well--into the reservoir, it reappeared a moment later just as the blood began to bubble to the surface of the water...
